Stand up paddle, better known as SUP, is a water activity (very popular in recent years!) that combines paddling while standing on a surfboard, using a paddle to move through the water.

This ancient and fascinating sport, started on the distant Polynesian lands, has crossed oceans all over the world to arrive in a city without equal, namely Venice. Here too, this activity has become increasingly popular among sports lovers and tourists visiting the Serenissima.

Indeed, practising SUP in the Venice area offers a unique and exciting perspective of the lagoon’s most unexplored and pristine surroundings. This allows you to discover a different side of Venice, far from the city’s crowded canals.

Furthermore, for those who prefer adventure in the open sea, it is possible to practice SUP in the waters surrounding Venice. This activity offers the chance to explore the coastline and enjoy breathtaking views, always with the lagoon city as a backdrop.

Either way, SUP in Venice offers an experience that combines exercise with the pleasure of exploring a unique natural and sea environment.

Regulations, restrictions and common sense

Due to an overcrowding of the city’s canals, the municipality of Venice (with Ordinance 433/2018) had tried to ban the use of SUPs, kayaks and canoes along the canals of the Serenissima. Despite this, following an appeal, the Tar (Regional Administrative Court) annulled the ban imposed by the municipality, specifying that these are boats with zero environmental impact and thus allowing the activity on certain days and at certain times.

This issue, particularly felt by the Venetian population, has ended up at the centre of a great debate concerning the legitimacy of these behaviours. According to residents, in fact, the use of these boards could pose a danger to the navigation of boats, taxis and waterbuses, and cause accidents and traffic delays.

The common sense of every excursionist should in fact intervene in favour of an appropriate and respectful behaviour towards a city as ancient as it is fragile as Venice, but unfortunately not all visitors are fully aware and sensitive to the fact that Venice is not an ‘amusement water park’ (this is how many Venetians have defined it) but rather one of the most important historical and cultural heritages in the world.

Therefore, the advice is always to practise SUP in places that are a little less crowded, therefore choosing area’s that are immersed in nature and far from dangers and boats, perhaps in the silence of the lagoon or on the shores of Camping Ca’ Savio, equipped to offer a unique experience to every visitor who wishes to practise this wonderful sport.
